Legend has it that a soldier of the Imperial Schutztruppe reached the summit of the Spitzkoppe in 1904. Apparently, he made a fire on the summit and never returned. His body was also never found. Whether the tale is true or simply a myth, it adds an air of mystery to the already captivating landscape. Today, the Spitzkoppe is a popular destination for rock climbers. The first ascent of its challenging west side took place in 1946, and since then, only around 600 roped parties have successfully reached the peak. The summer heat can be unbearable, making climbing particularly difficult during those months.
Beyond its climbing challenges, the granite peaks of Spitzkoppe serve as a testament for the history of Namibia. Hidden beneath the rocks are ancient rock paintings, offering a glimpse into the past. While many of the Bushman paintings have sadly deteriorated over time, a few still remain accessible to visitors.
