A remorseless globe of sun is scalding the sky. The rocks scattered across the mountain are too hot to touch, their surfaces radiating an intense warmth that burns through the soles of your shoes. In this barren, unforgiving landscape, shade is the only refuge, offering a brief moment of relief. As dusk approaches the heat begins to abate. The burning rocks, now cool enough to touch, take on a fiery hue as the sun sets –the burning mountain of Namibia.
In the northwest of Namibia, the Brandberg Mountain rises majestically, standing as a silent watchman looking over the desert landscape. This dome-shaped massif imposing presence commands awe from all who look at it. It is the highest mountain in Namibia, with its highest peak, Königstein, reaching 2,573 meters - the Brandberg dominates the surrounding plains. In Afrikaans, the name Brandberg refers to the mountain's glowing colour, often seen in the setting sun. The Brandberg is not only a geological marvel but it is also a treasure of ancient history.

Within the rocky ravines are many rock paintings from the Bushmen. The White Lady is the most famous rock painting and can be reached after a 40-minute hike over rugged terrain where it is located under an overhang. When approaching the paintings visitors get a glimpse into the distant past and how the Bushmen once roamed these lands. For the adventurers, there is much more to discover in the Brandberg. With a guide further exploration in the mountain is possible and visitors can take on the challenging hike to the summit, Königstein.

The journey is not for the faint-hearted as the terrain is rough and uneven. The intense heat and the scarcity of water make the hike a true test of endurance. The rough terrain and heat can be exhausting and tough, but the reward is sweet once the top of Königstein is reached. A panoramic view of Damaraland leaves one breathless. From the summit you can look down upon the land in all its beauty – the plains are endless. This is truly a sight worth the heat and effort. Once the sun and heat start to make way for the night the granite formations turn a deep red as they glow.

The last rays of daylight kiss the mountain goodnight. The refreshing night breeze brings relieve after the hot day. As dusk deepens, the sky turns into a canvas, painted with a brilliance unlike anything seen before. The stars appear one by one, filling heaven with a glittering glow. The silence and infinite stretch of stars evoke a sense of wonder and peace within. The combination of landscape and history makes this destination one for the bucket list.
