101 Reasons to visit Namibia: Lüderitz

By Gondwana Travel Centre
June 12, 2025

There is something magical about walking around in a historic harbour town. The natural coastal beauty is mixed with a dose of German colonial history. Walking through the streets and looking at the incredible German architecture creates a picturesque atmosphere. However, this little town is far from the lush green forests of Germany. This is Lüderitz and the name rolls off the tongue like that of long-forgotten pirate treasure. In the south of Namibia, nestled between the Sperrgebiet and Atlantic Ocean lies Lüderitz.

The town is named after Adolf Lüderitz who was a merchant from Bremen. Sadly, Lüderitz never knew that the area was filled with diamonds as he died on a boat trip to the Orange River. Although the town was named after Adolf Lüderitz, he was not the first person to discover the town, as Bartholomeu Diaz used Lüderitz, then called Angra Pequena, in 1487 as a landing point for resupply. With the discovery of wildlife in the ocean, profitable enterprises were set up. Lüderitz became a trading post and in 1883 Heinrich Vogelsang purchased Angra Pequena on behalf of Adolf Lüderitz from the Nama chief, Josef Frederiks II.

When Lüderitz died during his expedition to the Orange River, Angra Pequena was named Lüderitzbucht in his honour. Today, Lüderitz is known for its Crayfish festival and other seafood. The German architecture in the older parts of the town is magnificent and most of the houses are protected national treasures. Some of the houses are built on top of and sometimes into bedrock. The weather in this part of the world can be hectic and visitors will see that some of these buildings have wind shelters, and the orientation of the houses is not by accident. Tourists can spend the day strolling through the streets and marveling at the buildings while enjoying some seafood.

Afterwards, a tour through the museum will take one back in time. Then there is also the lighthouse near Diaz Point that is completely abandoned, but the rugged landscape is truly photogenic. For the more adventurous there are day tours to Kolmanskuppe and the restricted Diamond Area. The Sperrgebiet is only accessible with a tour operator and permit. This is a tour you do not want to miss. Within the Sperrgebiet Sandwich Habour, 4x4 Adventures own a concession and offers a unique day tour into the Sperrgebiet.

The highlight of this tour in the ghost town Pomona and impressive Bogenfels which is a prominent 55 m high lime rock arch. Lüderitz is a true hidden gem and a place you do not want to miss. At first glance, it may seem unremarkable, but when taking a closer look, you might just discover the diamond in the rough. After a day filled with exploration, visitors can end the day off with a refreshing drink while watching the sun set at Agate Beach.
