101 Reasons to visit Namibia: Naukluft Mountains

By Gondwana Travel Centre
January 23, 2026

One thing that has always left me in awe is the signs of life that flourish in the desert. The landscape seems to be the sun’s only companion. As far as the eye stretches the black rock covers the earth with a few tough bushes and clumps of grass. But with each step I take I am sure to hear a stream of running water- or is it my mind playing games with me? No, most definitely not, there is a crystal-clear stream running down the narrow gorge providing hope and life for the environment.

This narrow gorge is a hidden treasure that teaches us a valuable lesson to never judge a book by its cover! Approximately 300 km from the capital city, Windhoek, lie the Naukluft Mountains, which form the easternmost part of the Namib-Naukluft Park. The mountains are known for their wildlife, which includes the mountain zebra and leopards and spring water. The name translates literally to Narrow Gorge in English which perfectly describes the terrain as the mountains have many small streams and waterfalls.

What makes this even more special is the geology of the mountains. The Naukluft Mountains are a nappe complex. In 1930 Henno Martin and Hermann Korn made the first geological maps and cross-sections of the mountain range. The Naukluft has been the centre of attention for many years as scientists try to explain the mechanical paradox of over thrusts. Mostly limestone and dolomite are found in the mountains, and today the deep and narrow gorges are what characterize the Naukluft. Not only is this a geologically interesting site, but it is also able to store rainwater for a very long time and release it into springs.

This place is a hiker’s paradise with all its hiking routes that can be explored. Various routes will lead the hiker to new heights and the opportunity to reflect. The silence of the mountains is peaceful. However, peace was not always found in the recent past. The indigenous tribes of Namibia did not always see eye to eye with the colonial powers and Hendrik Witbooi used the Naukluft as hiding place from the German Schutztruppe. With the presence of spring water other forms of life are guaranteed.

Hikers should keep their eyes open for springboks, oryx, duikers, klipspringers, kudus and zebras. This hidden gem a must visit if you are looking to connect with nature and self. With no connection to the internet, one has the chance to think and experience the now. At first glance this barren landscape might seem like nothing special, but a closer look will reveal green landscape with natural spring water to cool off after a few days of hiking! There are many beautiful places in the world with green mountains and lots of water, but finding springs in the desert is something special. Namibia is filled with hidden wonders that make it an exciting country to explore.
