101 Reasons to visit Namibia: Tigerfishing in the Zambezi River

By Gondwana Travel Centre
April 30, 2026

It is a beautiful Friday afternoon, and the only sound is that of a fishing rod flying and plunging in the water. For about an hour that is all that everyone is doing. Then, suddenly there is a shout! Adrenaline is pumping as the fight between man and fish begins! I am reeling my heart out! With a hard pull, the tigerfish vaults into the air. With its razor-sharp teeth, it is all the wait worth it!

In the far north of Namibia lies a watery paradise known as the Caprivi Strip. In contrast to the rest of Namibia the Zambezi region is a true charm with its greenery and forests. With its winding rivers, tropical atmosphere and wildlife, this region offers many adventurous activities like world-class tiger fishing. Tigerfish need warm, welloxygenated waters such as the Okavango and Zambezi rivers.

The tigerfish is one of Africa’s apex freshwater predators that are known for its sharp teeth, explosive strikes and fighting spirit. Although tiger fishing is exciting, it also tests the patience, as hours can go by without catching anything. According to the experts, tiger fishing is all about the right technique and bait. These fierce predators can be caught by drift baiting or live bait or by using artificial lures. The real challenge is to find the right spot. Setting the bait and casting the lure in the water is the easy part but finding the right spot where the tigerfish might be hiding is much tougher, especially for someone with little experience. However, persistence is key and once you have caught that first tigerfish, it is difficult to stop.

I never truly understood why so many people were passionate about tiger fishing—until I caught one myself. Adrenaline pumping, thrill and excitement are all emotions one feels when the powerful jaws of a tiger fish are wrapped around the bait, and it jumps into the air. It is impossible not to have a smile on your face.

Not only do tigers make for incredibly fun fishing, but they are also known for their distinctive appearance. They have a silvery, elongated body with prominent horizontal black stripes. Their fins are forked tailed and often red. They are frequently compared to piranhas because of their sharp, conical teeth. Tigerfish can grow quite large and can reach over a meter in length.

While catching a tigerfish is often the highlight of any fishing trip, the Zambezi River offers the chance to catch other species too, such as bream and catfish. And even you do not manage to catch any fish, you can always sit back and enjoy the up-close view of the river life with a refreshing drink. Although you might not be lucky enough to feel the powerful bite of a tigerfish with its strong jaws and sharp teeth, you might see a crocodile or hippo flashing their teeth.

Whether you are a seasoned angler or an adventure seeker, fishing in the Zambezi River is an exciting activity that blends adrenaline and nature into an unforgettable experience. This is undoubtedly one of the best experiences that Namibia offers.
